In the world of home audio, video, and sound system, Yamaha is boss, I’m sure most of us must have heard of Yamaha at one point or the other about this subject. The fact is, Yamaha and been producing home audio product for years now and have made a name for themselves in this industry.

They have produced and are still producing many amazing models. Yamaha has always had two line ups, the RX-A model which is their premium series; the Avantage series, and the RX-V model which is very good and much more affordable, though has fewer features when compared to the Aventage series.

Today, we will be reviewing one of the models of the Yamaha RX-V series which is the RX-V685, Yamaha’s top model of the RX -V series. It was released in 2018 replacing its predecessor RXV683 which was released in 2017. Now, these two receivers share some similarities both in design, set up, and performance but as we expect the Yamaha RXV685 has more options you can tinker with and enjoy.

Yamaha RXV685 Review - AVR Receiver

Though both receivers support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, RX-V685 offers a substantial upgrade over RX V683, it differs as it has some additional features which include the number of audio outputs, RX-V685 has more HDMI outputs (2) than RX V683 which has only 1.

It also has more analog pre-out, a newer Bluetooth version, a higher DSD sampling rate via USB, higher-resolution music playback via USB, and works with Amazon Alexa. In design, both seem to be a replica of the other except that RX-V683 has a front HDMI which was removed from RX-V685.

Now, it’s time to leave the old and focus on the new RX V685. Let’s examine its features, performance to see if it’s worth your choice. But before we dive into all the explanations, let’s do a sneak peek to have an overview of this receiver.

The RX-V685 receiver is a mid-tier receiver that combines quality build, excellent performance with great features. It is a 7.2 channel receiver with a power of 90 watts per channel, it supports Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. It also has other amazing features like voice control, Airplay 2, MusicCast, Virtual DSP, High-resolution audio, Multi-zone capabilities, and much more.

Now, let’s get started:

Yamaha RX-V685 Features

Design & Remote Control

Like every other Yamaha receiver, RXV685 is a rectangular black box with its front face divided into two sections, it has several buttons making it look rather busier than it’s competitors. Its design is almost the same as its predecessor RX-V683 except for a single feature which was replaced, the front HDMI port which to me seems to be more of a disadvantage than an advantage.

The upper part of RXV685 is plastic and contains about 11 buttons and a display. The display screen in light blue and red is big enough to see from a normal cushion distance and can be dimmed for low light viewing.

Just below the display are the following is the zone 2, zone control button, info key, memory key, two preset buttons, FM and AM buttons, and tuning keys. On the right side of the display is the remote control sensor, also to the far right is the YPAO MIC port, standby indicator, and Main Zone key.

The lower part which is also the bigger section contains the volume knob, AUX Jack, USB jack, straight (connect) key, program keys, scene keys, tone control keys, input keys, and phone jack.

The rear panel of RXV685 is extremely busy with a ton of connections that are well laid out, they include remote in/out jacks, trigger out jack, wireless antennas, 2 HDMI out jacks, 5 HDMI input jack, Antenna jacks, Network jack, voltage selector. Other inputs on it are a power cable for connecting to an AC wall outlet, AV jacks for connecting video/audio playback devices, and inputting video/audio signals.

And for those who love turntable, right at the back of the RXV685 is a phono jack for your turntable, there is also a zone out jack, pre-outs jack, 2 subwoofer jack, speaker terminals. The RXV685 has a dimension of 17-1/8″×6-3/4″×14-7/8″ (435×171×378mm) and weighs about 23.1 Ibs making in the mid their range, though it isn’t one of the bigger ones we’ve seen, it’s still quite large and is better being static than being moved place to place.

When it comes to sound quality, it’s no news that Yamaha designs its product with the highest possible quality and has been known for this over the years, the RV series including the RXV685 isn’t any different.

Yamaha proprietary DAC in this Receiver is four Burr-Brown 384kHz/32-bit DAC, it is powerful enough to ensure all conversion duties with each other with all of them functioning maximally with an independent power supply to produce high-resolution sound and audio without any form of noise.

Also, Yamaha RXV685 has a new high sound quality IC that is used for volume control and large heat sinks suppress vibration.

Lastly on this, let’s talk about the remote,

If there’s one aspect of this receiver Yamaha changed drastically in its 2018 release, it is the remote control. The remote control received a complete face lifting, though the number of buttons on it is relatively the same as those of the previous version, the change in its arrangement gives it a more refined look, the buttons are arranged in a more practical layout which makes them easy to remember.

Yamaha RXV685 Review - Remote Control

It has a nice design and quite several buttons, in addition to the basic control, there is a button for operating external devices such as presets, Input sources, scenes, including buttons for sleep and party modes. Its design keeps liquid out of button crevices, it is also very responsive and durable.

The downside to the remote is its size, some say it’s too large and can be quite a heavy holding, and as other Yamaha receiver’s remote, it’s lack of a backlight, which makes it harder to use in the dark. However, an alternative to this is the remote app which you can download freely and used with your mobile phone or tablet.

This app can control almost every function of the receiver directly from the app, you can also work through set menus without switching on your TV. The Yamaha app provides access to the user manual for your receiver and also provides graphical cues for the receiver function. A unique thing about this app is that unlike other mobile apps that only control the unit, this app can be used to control almost all the receiver functions and can also be used to control Blue Ray Disc Players. It suitable and can be used by anyone anywhere as it is available in multiple languages.

Power and Connectivity

RXV685 is a 7.2 channel amplifier, it delivers current at 90 Watt per channel (2 channels driven, 8 ohms, 20 Hz-20kHz). Its maximum effective power is 150 W (1kHz, 1 channel driven) and its dynamic power per channel at different resistance of 8/4/4/2 are 125/165/190/235 W respectively.

The current power of 90 watts per channel decreases as the number of channel increases and exceeds two, that is, the power into each goes down when you surround yourself with many speakers, this doesn’t mean you cannot use more than two speakers and enjoy the surround sound you much desire because built into this receivers is a preamp with which you can connect an external amplifier to power as many speakers as you desire. Therefore you can have the following set up with RX V685; 7:2 channels set up, 5.1.2 surround set up.

Although RXV685 is power-packed it has been designed to save more power with its ECO mode. When this is on, as much as 20% of the normal power consumption will be saved.

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, RXV685 is excellent for its price range. Being a mid-tier receiver, we can’t expect it to contain all connectivities present in high tier receivers, however, it is still value-packed.

Yamaha RXV685 Review - Back View

Yamaha RX -V685 has 5 HDMI outputs and 2 HDMI inputs giving room to display pictures on two screens simultaneously, this means that you can display the same content on your TV and projector at the same time or place another TV in a common area such as your kitchen and watch same content simultaneously in your living room and kitchen.

All its HDMI support HDCP 2.2 technology which makes it compatible with 4 K Ultra HD sources and TV. They also support HDR, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and HLG, this aids viewing of HDR encoded content with more depth and realism. Giving you the best viewing experience you’ve ever imagine.

YAMAHA RXV685 has 9 speaker terminals at the back which are Front LR, Centre, Surround speaker back LR, Front presence LR, Surround Back LR. Out of these nine terminals, only seven can be used simultaneously with the inbuilt amplification, that is, this receiver can power a maximum of 7 channels at once with its inbuilt amplifier.

However, if you’ll love to increase the number of speakers it can support, you can connect an external amplifier to the front preamp to power your front speakers separately. There’s also a pair of preamp dedicated to subwoofers allowing you to feel and enjoy the sound, especially bass.

With RX -V684, Experience music in its natural form including low-frequency sounds from instruments like a pipe organ, bass guitar exactly like the singer intended. Also, Experience movie effects like explosions just like you’re right there on the scene.

The Surround back or front presence speaker output can be used for Zone 2 speakers in a second room.

Other connection ports RXV6A has are a composite video output, a component video output, two coaxial and two optical digital audio inputs, a pair of stereo RCA output for zone 2, Three pairs of stereo RCA inputs, a remote input/output jack, a phono input to maximize the sound quality of your vinyl player, enjoying its warmth and fuzziness.

With RXV6A, the network connection is not a problem as there is an Ethernet port for it. there’s also a headphone jack where you can insert your headphone plug to receive signal, so you can personally enjoy those sets of mp3 stored up on your smartphone without disturbing those around you.

YAMAHA V685’s FLAWLESS PERFORMANCE

Video

One of the things I enjoy doing during my leisure time is watching movies at home with my OLED tv, where I can pause the show and get popcorn or whatever for my kids without missing out too much.

This I won’t be able to do in a theatre even though I enjoy the movie theater experience, therefore I created a wonderful home theatre set up so I can have this same experience in my home and yes, the RX V685 does the magic with it’s unrivaled natural and realistic pictures and excellent surround sound. With RXV68, you can create a home cinema experience in your own home, watching your favorite movie.

A very good example of what this av receiver can do is with project power, I streamed this movie directly from Netflix using my blue ray player some weeks back, and trust me, I had an unrivaled experience. Especially at the big man scene when Newt after taking the drug was running after Art and Robin, the explosion that happened after he shot sounded so real that it felt like it happened just beside me.

The final scene is another amazing scene to see, audio effects was Abundant here and gunshots and blast felt real like they were traveling all around my room with great precision, the extremely good video quality of RXV685 added more sauce, making the movie an unrivaled experience, I bet you’ll also love to experience.

RXV685 is all-round perfect when it comes to having a cinema experience, you can ask me why I said this, well I’m not only a fan of action movies I also love romance movies, and with the experience RXV685 gives, it’s like putting you in the mood for love.

One of my recent favorite romance movies is the price of Salt (2015) and believe me when I say watching it with RXV685 was incredible, I enjoyed the pleasure of watching all the sumptuous interiors and dresses of the 1950’sin addition to being swept away by romance, it was like traveling back in time to witness two people in love; it’s phenomenal.

The secret to Yamaha RXV685 7.2 channel AV receiver’s astounding home theatre experience isn’t far-fetched; Yamaha’s proprietary sound field creation technology.

Yamaha created this especially after collecting sound field data from famous music clubs, cinema and concert halls, etc, they then combined the measured sound data with digital processing and incorporated it into their LSI devices. This results in the production of the 3D immersive sound and outstanding view you’ll experience with RXV68.

enhanced Audio Return Channel

eARC is a feature that will be available in RXV685 but firmware update, it is often referred to as the next-gen ARC as it, it enables you to send the original full-resolution audio at higher speed and bandwidth via HDMI cable, it is also compatible with Dolby Atmos, DTS.

eARC is a feature of HDMI 2.1 that can also be added to HDMI 2.0. eARC also features lip-sync correction, putting an end to the problem of audio lagging behind the video, both are now in perfect sync.

With eARC, you don’t need to rely on HDMI CEC for pairing and discovery anymore, it has it’s own data channel that allows for communication between connected devices, this system automatically leads to selecting and using the best audio format

I have tried various tracks with different rhymes and tones with this receiver and it performed excellently well, delivering the sound naturally and smoothly with all characters – clear and clean, detailed and defined. Most times, I stream music directly from Spotify and listen using the direct mode, this turns off all other unneeded electronics in the receiver, focuses only on the needed ones, to give a better listening experience.

One of the songs I stream a lot is I will always love you by Whitney Houston and trust me, listening to this song with RXV685 is phenomenal. All the highs and lows tones are clearly emphasized. All the instruments remained intact from the drums to the guitar, keyboard, every single one of them was awesome. It was just as though I was sitting right in front of Whitney when she was singing the song.

RXV685 features Dolby Atmos and DTS-X This enables the movement of sound as individual entities all around you, free of channel restriction. Enjoy sound in its 3-dimensional form with all the clarity, richness, and power of Dolby Sound.

Another Yamaha feature that aids sound in three dimensions is its DSP mode. This mode is for you if you sometimes find surround sound forced or fatigued. This is feature makes surround sound freaking amazing, it puts an end to every form of forced or fatiguing sound. Giving you this feeling of putting you in a bubble of wow sound.

Multiple streaming options

Another cool feature of this Yamaha av receiver that I must mention is its ability to explore the world of music with its in-built streaming services. Stream your favorite songs directly from Spotify, Pandora, Deezer, Napster, SiriusXM internet radio, and more. To do this, you have to be connected to the Ethernet, you can connect to your network by Wifi, Cable, or Bluetooth.

RXV6A Easy Setup, Easy Operation

Yamaha has made set up super easy, the user interface that comes with this receiver has been improved when compared with previous releases, especially with the introduction of a graphical interface, making it simple and easier to navigate through the settings.

Yamaha RXV685 Review

The graphical interface introduced by Yamaha is a high-resolution display with clear, graphs, selectable menu, and status bar which shows the volume level, DSP mode, input source, etc

Also together with the receiver comes the owner’s manual which is handy in setting up. Though it doesn’t have everything you need, it has just a little more than the basics to start the unit running. However, Yamaha offers a multilingual AV set up guide, an app you can download for free from Yamaha, contains almost everything you need to know about the settings and for set up, including, information on the Music Cast App, YPAO, etc.

The downside to the setup is that you might find it difficult to understand the graphical interface if you aren’t very good at interpreting graphs. Read our review of the Yamaha Aventage RX-A2A.

Designed just for your room (YPAO Calibration)

Yamaha uses YPAO – RSC (Reflected Sound Control) as its technology for sound optimization. Yamaha Parametric Acoustic Optimiser (YPAO) is an auto-calibration system that optimizes the settings of each of your speakers to get the best possible sound based on your room’s composition and acoustic.

This amazing auto-calibration system measures speaker volume and delay, then sets it. It also matches speaker timbrel to each other by measuring the frequency response of speakers and using the PEQ (parametric Equaliser) to do equalize them.

R.S.C (Reflected Sound Control) is a more advanced setting that calibrates audio parameters to achieve the optimum sound in up to 8 sitting positions. It does this by correcting sound reflections and ensuring a uniform frequency speaker response.

The era of manual calibration is gone. YPAO does this automatically, you can now calibrate your speakers to suit your room with no stress, all you need to do is to put the supplied microphone at a listening distance, switch on YPAO and leave it to perform the magic- Extraordinary Sound.

Let’s Talk

Alexa, ask MultiCast to play favorite 1 in the sitting room and 2 in the kitchen. With Alexa voice control featured in RXV685, Just say it, you’ll have it, all you need to do is ask. RXV685 supports voice control devices such as Google Assistant, Apple Siri, Amazon Alexa.

Features Yamaha RX-V685

You can also use it as a Google Home device or Echo dot, however, for this, you’ll need an external speaker- Welcome a Smart home.

This AV receiver with 4K capability also has scene buttons you can use to preset scenarios. You can preset the buttons for different sources by selecting different sources eg a streaming service, internet or FM radio station, a USB device, a song on NAS (National attached storage), or a PC and DSP mode.

Is Yamaha RXV685 worth my money?

Yamaha RX-V685 in my opinion is one of the best receivers in the middle tier class. Do you think it’s possible to have too many features? With RX- V685 I’ll say the answer is a capital YES.

This receiver checks off all the boxes you’ll expect of a middle-tier receiver and even has more features.

Check best product price

Final Verdict

Born from engineering expertise, RX-V685 is built with a strong emphasis on both quality and performance, it is absolute quality for when you have the very best as your options. Yamaha RX-V685 numerous inputs, they include 5HDMI inputs which are HDCP 2.2, which makes it compatible with 4K Ultra HD sources and TV. It also has 4 sets of phono, Bluetooth, and a USB port.

This receiver is Dobly Atmos and DTS; X enabled, therefore you can choose to go for a 5.1.2 channels Dolby set up with its power – 90 watts per channel. It’s ultra-high-performance 384kHz/32 bit DAC transmits signals into excellent audible sounds and visual format.

Other important features of RX-V685 include YPAO audio calibration system with RSC, Yamaha MultiCast, Apple Airplay 2, Cinema DSP, Zone 2, Voice Control support, wireless speakers, eARC abilities (will be available by a future update), High-Resolution Audio, and Scene buttons. Also, read Yamaha TSR-7850 review.

Another Yamaha RX-V685 shines is in its user interface and control options. Yamaha has made this receiver very simple and easy to use, even for first-time users. It’s remote is well designed and practical. The graphical user interface which was recently introduced guides in controlling the amplifier function of this unit.

And lastly, the Yamaha setup guide app which is available for free download further simplifies the whole setup process. With Multi Cast support and voice control option, this receiver is user friendly and its operation might not necessarily need multiple remotes.

This receiver through excellent has some downsides we’ll talk about now. As a middle tier reliever, we definitely expect it to lack some features seen mainly in an upper-tier reliever, the RX-V685 lacks Dolby Atmos height Virilization and DTS; X virtual technology, it doesn’t support HDR 10 ++ and is not IMAX enhanced.

The RX-V685 lacks specific gaming technology such as ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and QFT (Quick Frame Transport ) and might not be the best for gaming.

Also, this receiver lacks a front HDMI port, it’s remote too busy, long, cluttered, and heavy, it is very difficult to use at night because it lacks a backlight. Lastly, its price is a little bit on the high side when compared to other receivers in its class, however, in all, Yamaha RX-V685 is a very excellent receiver I will highly recommend.

Yamaha RXV685 Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the best Yamaha receiver?

Answering this question can be quite difficult. Firstly because all Yamaha receivers are top-notch and also because what we regard as best varies with individual and different factors such as affordability, features, etc.

However, the Yamaha Aventage series is the top range model from Yamaha with the highest quality components and latest feature, they’re usually also the most expensive, and of the Avantage series Yamaha MX A-5200 Aventage is said to be the best and also the most expensive.

However, if you’ll prefer a receiver that won’t break your bank account, the RX V series might just be the best for you and the very best of this series I’ll say is the RX V685

Here’s the reason why: RX-V685 is the only Yamaha receiver in the mid-tier that has features of top model receivers. It is the only model in the budget RV line that is equipped with two HDMI outputs that can work simultaneously, supports MultiCast for building a wireless multiroom system, and has a phono stage for connecting your turntables.

Other features RX V685 has are YPAO calibrating system, voice control compatibility, preset scene, etc. With RX V685, you have access to stunning, unrivaled experiences in the world of audio, video, and gaming.

  2. How do I connect my Yamaha receiver to my Smart TV?

Connecting your receiver to your TV isn’t difficult at all. First, you need to enable eARC (HDMI CEC) on your TV settings. The name of this feature varies with TV’s, for example, it is called Anynet on Samsung TV. After enabling it, switch off your TV.

Your Smart TV should have an HDMI port labeled ARC behind it, find this port. Connect one end of an HDMI cable to it and the other end to the HDMI -ARC output on your receiver. Once you have successfully connected them, turn on both appliances. You are done with a successful connection.

  3. What is the difference between a 5.1 and 7.2 receiver?

These terms 5.1, 7.2 may seem to be jargon, and trust me, it was to be the first time I saw it. However, it’s not difficult to understand and tell the difference. A 5.1 receiver is a receiver with 5 speaker channels and 1 subwoofer while a 7.2 receiver is a receiver with 7 speaker channels and 2 subwoofers.

In a 5.1 system, you’ll have a front right and left speaker’s, a center channel, a pair of surround speakers, and 1 subwoofer while in a 7.2 system, each surround speaker is divided into 2 channels to give a surround and a rear, it also has 2 subwoofers. The essence of this system is that it gives true surround sound.

  4. How do I use Zone 2 on my Yamaha receiver?

First, connect your speakers to the Extra SP Zone 2/F terminals on your Receiver. Then, turn on your TV, press settings on your remote, an on-screen menu will be displayed. Next, select set up then speaker menu, select power amp assign, and under this select 7.2 + Zone 1.

How to?

How do I connect my Yamaha RX V685 to WIFI?

  2. Step 2
